The application of flat panel has been extended from portable devices to information display boards, and even to super size video display following the advent of the digital era and the popularity of the Internet. Owing to the rise of the nano-science, the development of OLED was able to break new ground. Multil-color OELD panel has already been commercialized, and the mass production of true-color OLED is underway. Breakthroughs in the development of display related materials will facilitate the commercialization of light-weight, thin, large size, flexible and low-cost display panel for such as: liquid crystal display (LCD) or field emission display (FED), hence will certainly strengthen its marketable position and increase its market share.
Thick film FED and scroll panel are the major development trend in flat panel display. Thick film printing process and FED technology flatten the screen, not only reserve the picture quality as CRT, but also make it energy-saving and compact. By combining the low applied field, high emission density and high stability features of nano-tube or novel nano materials for field emission display, brand-new type of flat panels with larger size have been produced at lower costs. These products have low driving voltage, high illumination, wider viewing angle, and save energy. Such a brand-new self-illuminating FED containing the features of low voltage, high illumination, high brightness, and simple driving system as in thin film FED can be produced entirely with thick film printing processes to make larger size and lower cost flat panel display, and this certainly will bring a new horizon in flat panel development.

Nanotechnology is expected to have major impact on the flat panel display, will bring major changes in the manufacturing of FED and LCD in Taiwan, and will help extend the applications of flat panel display.
