With outreach to the wider community and better quality collaboration as goals, The Ohio State University has established The Industry Liaison Office (ILO) to serve as the “gateway” to OSU innovation and expertise. The ILO, led by Dr. Sharell Mikesell, Associate Vice President, has been launched to connect business and industry to OSU discoveries, ground-breaking research, innovations, and subject matter experts.
The ILO is well-poised to help industry collaborators build relationships with Ohio State researchers and gain access to Ohio State equipment, laboratories, and students. The ILO will open the lines of communication – promoting two-way communication by helping voice the needs of industry within Ohio State and spreading the expertise of Ohio State’s researchers outside the university.
The ILO has been working very hard to become the best informed office on campus by building relationships with researchers from colleges and departments across campus. The ILO knows what Ohio State researchers are working on. The ILO also knows who to ask on campus for up-to-the-minute information. Connecting Ohio State researchers to industry will certainly fuel economic development and growth and elevate the visibility and reputation of Ohio State as the university moves from research eminence to research excellence.
The ILO has been structured to help OSU researchers connect with industry through:
- Facilitating seamless and strategic collaborations with companies looking for expertise
- Identifying companies interested in building collaborative relationships specifically with OSU researchers
- Introducing OSU researchers to key industry leaders in targeted research areas and helping gain access to industry facilities and personnel
- Promoting the university’s vast research potential and technological advances to industry
- Locating potential sources of industry funding for OSU research
- Identifying learning experiences and internship and employment opportunities for OSU students
- Enhancing multidisciplinary research initiatives on campus by connecting OSU researchers with other OSU researchers performing work in specific areas of expertise
- Working with the Office of Technology Licensing and Commercialization to move intellectual property toward commercialization.
For industrial concerns interested in building relationships with OSU researchers and accessing OSU resources, the ILO is poised to open lines of communication and help build successful collaborations. The ILO will promote two-way communication, helping voice the needs and opportunities in two directions, from industry into OSU, and from OSU out to industry.
OSU is the nation’s most comprehensive research university. Truly extraordinary world-class research takes place at OSU each and every day. Many OSU researchers are on track for becoming recognized as leaders in their fields of subject matter expertise. Such researchers know how to develop technologies that are ground-breaking and innovative.
The ILO is asking OSU researchers to help it stay informed about your cutting-edge research and serve as the best-informed office on campus. Along those lines, the ILO has appealed to OSU researchers to tell the ILO about their research. Connecting OSU researchers to industry will help fuel economic development and growth and elevate the visibility and reputation of OSU as the university moves from research eminence to research excellence.
